Haha Kathy that sounds like a good assessment! I liked the Holly story (she was in The Outsider as well as a previous trilogy), and I kind of liked the last story, "Rat."
I started Crazy Rich Asians next. I like it but am finding it kind of a tough read due to all of the characters to keep straight and the footnotes!

I'm reading The Christmas Sisters by Sarah Morgan. It's meh. It's good enough that I'm still reading it. I'm not sure if that will continue.
I'm also reading The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. It's good.

Not OT, I've got a book or two to recommend, if you're interested in stillness meditation.
Their system is based on the idea that creating a sense of physical ease within your body and quietness within your mind is very, very good for you. Basically, you get still, and stay that way, gently and gradually letting go of tension in every area of your body. Easily, gently, quietly. No mantras, no breath work, no counting, no prayer, no foreign languages or obscure philosophical concepts to ponder. Just stillness and physical ease, with the goal of creating a sense of quietness and calmness within your mind. (editing to add: The practice is said to be very good for those struggling with anxiety, helping let go of the sense of hypervigilance and guardedness that contribute to distress.) I've been trying to do it twice a day lately. My tendency to distract myself is getting in the way, but I do enjoy the practice. I'm intrigued enough that I'm planning to buy a longer version of this short guided meditation. (The author is a therapist in Australia, has a website where downloads are possible, but I haven't tried it yet. Still disappointed I can't just get a cd. ) Here's a short Youtube video with a guided meditation led by Pauline McKinnon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8AhG9uHGuQ And here are links to the two books I've read: In Stillness Conquer Fear by Pauline McKinnon https://www.amazon.com/Stillness-Con.../dp/1925073149 The technique is based on the work of Ainslie Meares, and since most of his own work is out of print and overpriced, try "Ainslie Meares on Meditation" by Owen Bruhn. https://www.amazon.com/Ainslie-Meare.../dp/0646966936 I'm not sure I like it all that well, since it's mostly just a synopsis of his works, but it does discuss the specific techniques of the meditation practice they have in mind in good detail.

I just finished Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. If you like Shirley Jackson, you’ll like this! It’s supposed to be adapted into a miniseries.
Before that I read, Music to My Years: A Mixtape Memoir of Growing Up and Standing Up by Cristela Alonzo. Today, I started Eat A Peach: A Memoir by David Chang. I always forget how much I like memoirs! |
