Besides, while Arnold has always advocated general fitness and has done some good work, his own physique (especially his iconic back-in-the-day physique) exemplifies bodybuilding, not the sort of fitness most people want or can achieve. Not that most people could've been Jack LaLanne, mind you, but his look and his regimen were more realistic.

Tony is definitely aiming for a JL-like impact, but he hasn't reached that level of visibility (yet). And I'm sorry, but I've never heard Gilad's name outside of VF so I have to assume he's not reached a high level of popular impact. Richard Simmons and Denise Austin both have high visibility...

A few candidates might include Charlene Prickett who is about 65?, Richard Simmons about 63, Margaret Richard about 61, Gilad about 57, Denise Austin about 54, Kathy Smith and Tamilee Webb about 53, and Gin Miller about 52. I was including age as some have a lot of years to go to get to Jack's age, maintain health and fitness and still be great role models.

In the short time she's been on the scene, she's made quite an impact on the fitness and has made a huge name for herself. For the general public, she's the most recognized fitness personality. I know some VFers can't get past her snarl but she definitely has heart. I think she's here to stay.
JM is well-known, but the word "legend" is the last word that comes to my mind when I think of her.

LaLanne's Successor Nominees

I nominate Jake (as in Body by Jake) or Arnold Schwarzenegger, and agree that Gila is also a good choice.

I don't think anyone can fill Jack's shoes, just like no one could ever fill Bob Hope's shoes.

I'm probably Jack's least big fan here but I agree that he was a fitness pioneer like no other, simply due to being there first and longest. Jillian pioneered... playing a trainer on tv and parlaying that into product marketing?

Often imitated but never duplicated, along with so many other greats for their skills. i.e. Michael Jackson and more.

And thank goodness there is usually only one...

Thumbs up

Yea, these are all great fitness icons.

I didn't mean to exclude anyone, I just love Jack and feel he was an original.

I love all these that ye mention as great examples of the power of exercise in our lives as we age. Nothing wrong with mentioning the age factor. Exercise as we age is increasingly important.
