Jessica Smith talked about this in her email and also on FB. She mentioned Stacy Sims. Here’s a link to the post on her website.

Michael Mosley’s podcast Just One Thing has a new episode on HIIT.
Bonus is that it’s short! Summarizes some of what Rhonda Patrick says, but in a few minutes. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001xvhlJ The interesting thing to me was that the researcher he interviewed emphasized that HIIT basically just means intervals, going to a 7-8/10 intensity. He said HIIT doesn’t have to mean you go all out to #10 every time, like the hardest all-out sprint you could do. I think the purpose of this podcast is to inspire people to establish little habits that add up to health benefits, so they aren’t going to want to describe HIIT as incredibly daunting. I’m even more curious about just how hard people worked in all of these studies to get benefits. Maybe it’s a case of anything more vigorous than moderate is good, but higher intensity is better? My goal from now through the summer is to do an little experiment, aiming for 20-30 minutes of HIIT once per week and stick to it through spring and early summer and see if there are changes in the things my fitness tracker can measure. I can do twice a week, but only if I want to. |
