I'm in a book club and have read a lot of the books mentioned--I can vouch for The Glass Castle, and others. Also, The Kite Runner is good, as well as Three Cups of Tea, Water for Elephants, I could go on ... I just got Under the Tuscan Sun out from the library yesterday, so hopefully I'll enjoy that and it will be much better than the movie! I also love Nicholas Sparks.
If you're looking for something light to read by the pool or on the beach, my girlfriend from my book club is an author who just came out with her second novel. She writes romantic suspense, and she's a very entertaining writer. Her name is Laura Griffin and she wrote "One Last Breath" and "One Wrong Step." The second book is actually set in Austin, TX, where we both live, so that's interesting!

ETA: Yes! The Secret Life of Bees was great too. I did feel the same way as some about Eat Pray Love (the woman was privileged and selfish), but most of the girls in my book club liked it. I've also read all the Sue Grafton mysteries--she created a cool character in those!
